MC-303

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: 16-part multi-timbral, 28-voice rompler and 8-part pattern sequencer. Tabletop box with detachable wallwart power supply. MIDI In, Out. Two analog outs (L/Mono & Right).

WHY IT IS PART OF HdK: In Feb. '97 I was poking around in a music shop for no apparent reason. I happen to spy this cool box, so I started playing with it. At the time I was heavily into making fractal based video tapes. I thought this box would be good to add monotonous trance audio tracks to my videos. My current M.O. with videos was to use songs stolen from CDs as the soundtrack. I figured that if I made my own music, I could sell my videos for real money. The guy behind the counter said, "for you, $700." I thanked him for the fun demo and split. While driving home the pressure built substantially. After several miles, I actually turned around and bought this box. This was my first synth (of the current era of my life). This box really changed my life. I stopped buying CDs after I purchased the MC-303.

TR-505

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Drum Machine with 8-voice polyphony. Tabletop box with detachable wallwart power supply. MIDI In, Out. Two analog outs (L/Mono & Right). Cassette I/O.

WHY IT IS PART OF HdK: Not satisfied with my Yamaha QX5/Alesis D4 quasi-drum machine, I looked to get a real one with the infamous 'grid' programming. I selected the TR-505 because it can send all data on programmable MIDI channels and note numbers. But, more importantly, it can sync to MIDI clock while in record mode and transmit all MIDI data simultaneously. Also, switching instrument focus while writing does not create any glitches. So, it is a great live beat-box interface. Lacking is an easy way of programming velocity information with each note. Hence, rather static drum patterns are this machines forte. To combat this and retain the live programming aspect, my current plan is to use the QX5 for canned drum patterns with dynamics built in merged with the 505's live drum patterns, both driving the D4 drum module for sounds. I actually do not use the TR-505's output at this time.
