WHY IT IS PART OF HdK: I went to a local flea market searching for an overhead projector last February '99. One of the first vendors I found there had a black box mixed in with a pile of clothes. Always curious about possible electronics I took a closer look. I just about wet my pants when I saw it was an Oberheim Matrix-6R. I figured it must be trashed to be on sale at the flea market. I continued on with my search of all other vendors looking for the overhead projector, all the while thinking of the M-6R I had just seen. The projector search was a bust, so I headed back over to the vendor with the Oberheim. I asked the guy how much "for that thing." He pointed to another guy who spoke English. I repeated my question. He told me $75, "or offer," he added when he noticed I appeared to not like his price. I asked if it worked. "I guarantee it," was his reply. Yeah right, a flea market guarantee. The box alone is worth almost $75, so I figured it was a good risk. I acted disinterested and casually walked away from this vendor. When I was out of his sight, I ran to the ATM to get some cash. While waiting in line, I pondered how much I should offer and still feel good about myself. I decided not to go too low and piss him off. When I returned to our vendor about 30 minutes later I offered $50 to take it off his hands. He suggested $60 and I slapped three twenties in his mitt before he was able to complete his sentance. Knowing that I was concerned about its functionallity, he offered to walk with me to an AC outlet to plug it in and verify the front panel display lights up. Figuring it must do that much, or else he wouldn't offer to do this, I declined. Besides, neither of us had either a keyboard, amp, or speakers at the flea market to really verify operation. He bagged up the cables (it had a couple of MIDI cables attached) and sent me on my way. Just as I was about to leave his space he asked if I knew what it was. I told him it was a synthesizer. He knodded and patted me on the back. All the way to the parking lot I was thinking to myself, "this thing just can't work. It's got to be broken." I got it home and checked it out, works like a champ. Other than a nick on the front panel, this this is in great shape.

It is a great 'predominately' analog box which complements the other HdK instruments quite well. So far I've been using it for weird swelling/undulating pads. It also does great leads, basses, and strings.
